Dear Governor McCrory,
We wish to share our concerns about legislation you signed into law this past March, 2016. House Bill 2 has overturned protections for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender people and sanctioned discrimination across North Carolina. We feel that HB 2 has the potential to impair patient care at health care facilities throughout North Carolina.
Many North Carolinians are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender people. Indeed, HB 2 recognizes this demographic and highlights issues related to sexual identity, gender identity and gender expression.
HB 2 negatively impacts public health care and the duty for clinicians to provide the best of care for all people. HB 2 compromises the ability of health care facilities to provide safe and comfortable facilities for LGBT patients and their loved ones. HB 2 protects those who would discriminate against patients during the very times when empathetic care is most critical to treatment and survival.
As patient focused nonprofit organizations, we strongly urge you and the leadership of North Carolina’s legislature to repeal this law in the upcoming legislative session. Caregiver Action Network
