Do you remember at what point you stopped calling your father “daddy”? I don’t recall the age when?I switched to “dad”, but I’m almost 100% certain I wasn’t five. Recently my boy decided to try on “dad” to see how it fit, and he appears to like it. I, on the other hand, am feeling a little nostalgia for three weeks ago when I was still daddy. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take my abbreviated title. For a few days not too long ago he was calling me Keith and that didn’t work for me at all. Plus, it’s better than some of the names that I’ve heard kids call their fathers. I just feel like he’s growing up so fast (cliche, but fitting).
What’s more is that he also refers to me as Bro. As in “Bro, do you want to play with me?” and “Bro, hey bro, can I have breakfast?” I don’t use the term. I like to use homie and brother, but never bro. So I’m at a loss for where he got it from. I must admit that I am amused enough to let it slide. OK I?kind of encourage it.?He’s developing a swagger that I I didn’t have until I was in college?and?swagger is?usually?a trait that leaders possess. I just have to make sure?that it doesn’t transform into cockiness and arrogance – but he has a few more years?until I have to worry about?that.
One more thing. Forgive me, it’s a little off topic. This coming week a Charlie Brown special is coming on network TV. It comes on after the boy’s bedtime. Forget DVRs and the fact that you can buy?it on DVD. Forget that it’s 2008. Think about when you were a kid and?watching those specials (commercials and all) were, well, special. Do you let the five year old stay up or do you wait until next year, or perhaps the year after that?
My oldest sometimes just calls me by my first name. It still surprises and amuses me when he does it.
LOL – Dev’s developing swagger, huh? That’s great! You know swagger (not too much tho) is needed these days!
Take a tip from Thor’s father Odin’s grand vizier: “Smite Him. Smite Him where he stands”, then banish him to earth in the form of a doctor with a cane so that he might learn humility!
lolololol.
Seriously, my little five year old attempts every now and then to test me by usuing my first name, inf act all of my sons did that about his age, the bring it down a notch, then you have to look forward to the teenage years (I have a 15 and a 13 year old), all I can say is, stay in shape, because sons generally get bigger then their dads, my 15 year old is 4 inches taller than me and is a yellow belt in brazilian jui jitsu, lucky for me he had respect instilled early!
let him stay up late! these are the memories he’ll cherish!
Let him stay up!
This is funny I’m imagining him calling you “bro” and it is really making me giggle; where the F did he get that from!? Im grown and I still call my mother “Sue” sometimes to annoy her… maybe he’ll settle into “Pops” how would you like that..Yea let him stay up I know you can youtube it or DVR it or Tivo or whatever but these are the things you remember and hold dear…
My seven year-old is firmly in “mom” territory and the five year-old is definitely still in “mommy” mode. When he moves to mom, I’ll probably cry.
I let my boys stay up for the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special last night — I didn’t realize it was an hour though! I wish the networks would start stuff like that at 7pm instead of 8pm.
And Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
“Bro.” I like that. BTW let the kids stay up. Several Christmas specials will be on soon.
swagger is cool, but don’t forget “respect”!
i’m from the old school, so for my seven-year old daughter, it’s “mommy” and “daddy”. outside influences are making our kids grow up way too fast, they are losing their innocence. even though, “bro” sounds cute on a blog, you’re not his brother, you’re his father… imagine what he’ll be calling you (or doing around you) ten years from now.
let “the devil” be a child… “dad” should suffice for another 5 or 6 years.
oh yeah, let him stay up and watch the Christmas specials. i watched “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” with my daughter earlier this week… despite the cheesy “special effects” (like the cotton ball Abonible Snowman) it was fun! it only happens once a year!
