(The “explicative” is hos, by the way, I just didn’t want to put it in the title.) These were the words uttered by the famous-for-being-mean radio legend Don Imus in reference to Rutgers University’s ladies b-ball squad. I’m going to avoid getting into a rant over this guy’s ignorance. I’m not going to call for his termination, or for his sponsorships to be pulled. In fact I’m in favor of him taking his show on the road. Hell, he can say such brazenly offensive words on the air to millions of listeners, so he should have no problem spewing his bile directly into the faces of the masses. I suggest his first stop be my home town of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Then, if he is physically able, he should get on the “A” train and ride up to 125th Street in Harlem. I’ll personally provide the bullhorn.
Those ladies from Rutgers are inspirations to many young women, and should be treated as such. Real life is not like Baywatch. Every black woman does not have to look like Halle Berry to be beautiful.
I’m so tired of having to write about stuff like this.
I’m sick and tired of people feeling as if they can say whatever the heck they feel like about Black women (people). It is exhausting…
They certainly know in whose company to utter that nonsense.
Anyway, I love your blog. My husband and I have a 5 year old named Devin (the devil) of our very own. They could very well be twins in the personality department. 🙂
I’m tired too my brother, but I’m afraid that this world will always have ignorant people and those who will be a racist to the end of time. If you speak it, does that not reflect on your character and the type of person you are? You can apologize till you are blue in the face but the fact still remains.. you spoke it just the same and sometimes an apology just don’t get it. I would like to see him take his show on the road also following your itinerary.. with one small change if I may. Have him stop by this Black Vietnam Veteran’s house.. you may want this to be the last stop on the list tho 😉 .. I’ll send him bus fare.
“That’s some nappy headed [explicative] there
…
This from a man who looks as if he is nicely preserved with Heroin and cocaine, he won’t even need a mortician when it is time for him to goto hell.
That’s why I really don’t like shock jocks, because they’ll say anything to get a laugh or get themselves on tv. It’s a shame he could get away with it just because “that’s what he does”.
But either way, i just discovered your blog and i have to say it’s a great site. As a black man that grew up without a father in the home, it’s really good to see one taking the time to raise his son right.
My wife’s question is, how come there are so many stupid famous people, and why are they so popular? whatever the answer is, it sucks.
a previous poster said it above, he knew WHEN and WHERE to say it… i guarantee you that if i’d been in the booth with him, he would’ve never uttered such a thing (i am a tall (6’4″), big (240 lbs.) Black man) who RARELY, if ever, has to put up with that kind of $#*%!!! i don’t normally advocate violence, but in this case…
my sister is a graduate of Rutgers and played basketball in high school. i take offense for all of those hard working and beautiful Black young women who grace the Rutgers Scarlet Knights basketball team. they are student athletes who were playing for a national championship (for Christ’s sake), i am offended that a blubbering idiot like Don Imus would be given free reign to disgrace their integrity and their heritage with impunity!
i am (still) pissed!
Sadly enough, Imus has been saying this kind of insanity for years about lots of groups, not just black women, and folks just lap it up. He says the kinds of stuff lots of Americans want to say but don’t. Millions of people listen to him every single day and mindlessly laugh their behinds off at his “jokes”. And we all know that there are plenty of folks that agree that all black women are hos…oh wait, Imus might be able to say that Jay Z calls black women hos. And let’s not forget Fat Joe and L’il Wayne singing “Let it rain on them hos” in their latest hit. The video features them throwing money on black and Latina women. Countless “hip hop impresarios” obviously agree with Imus since they refer to women as hos so frequently.
Sigh, I’m tired of hearing this kind of mess as well and wish Imus would get fired. But, I’m not holding my breath.
Why are we offended…isn’t just as offending as the hoes we allow are rappers to call black women in videos…why is it causing a fuss…because its a white man?
Well, I’m so glad “Los Angelista” stepped forward and added what is generally missing from these kind of conversations. She said everything I’ve grown all too weary of saying repeatedly about this subject. All I have to add is, I betcha won’t see any man, be he Black or White or any other color leading the charge to ban this word (or any of its equally offensive counterparts) nor any rapper’s use it. No, that would be censorship, now wouldn’t it? (LOL) Yes, Imus is a jerk. And so too are brothers who in 2007 continue to make money calling sisters out of their names . . .
I agree that women should not be degraded by calling them out of their name, regardless to their race. Should rappers be more socially responsible? Yes, of course they should. The difference with the Imus situation is that rappers get censored by the FCC if their lyrics contain derogatory slurs. This man has not only a nationally syndicated radio show, but is also on national television daily. He has made a career on based inflammatory statements. When he says sorry today is it for the statement he made a few days ago about the sisters at Rutgers or is it for calling Serena and Venus Williams “animalsâ€, or is for comparing the NY Knicks starting line up to a “bunch of gorillasâ€, or is for hiring staffers to make nigger jokes for him, need I continue? Jay-Z, Fat Joe and L’il Wayne may be offensive, but I’ll bet you a dollar to a donut that if their statements were viewed by a national audience on a daily basis and disrespectful to another race (read: Caucasians) they wouldn’t have a chance to apologize and sweep this under the rug. The problem with consistently saying you’re sorry is after a while it just doesn’t mean much, especially if you keep doing the same thing over and over again. This pattern of behavior has grown acceptable and that is an issue. And just for the record, what the hell does having tattoos have to do with being nappy headed?? If the man is going to be a bigot, he should get better writers for his ethnophaulsims…
Hello Keith,
The world needs more men like you. Because I honestly believe that “impossible is nothing to God, I can remain hopeful that our individual efforts to make a difference in the lives of our children will not be in vain.
There’s still a lot of work to be done. Thank you for doing your part. Just know that you’re not alone. I hear you. God sits high, but He looks low.
AMEN GY. You have our own brothers calling us everything but children of God.And, what’s sad about rappers doing it, they are all Black, African, Negros. Mr. Imus deserves no termination and he does not have to apologize. Let’s get these million dollar brothers to apologize first!
We could just get together and beat Imus’s arse?
I’m in? Anyone else?
When I first read about what he said, I wondered what possible context he could have actually had those thoughts. Was that supposed to be funny??? Or being so visibly near death, did he just not care about what he was saying? I’ve never listened to Imus, I’m sure I heard him a couple times 15-20 years ago when i lived back east, but I never found him interesting enough to tune back in. Maybe that’s a testament to my good taste.
I’m glad CBS fired him. I know if he called my daughter a ho, I’d walk into the studio and smack him in the head. And I’d smack him for the “nappy” part of it too.
Well, that one less a-hole in the public eye. And one strong message that our kids should grow up in a better world. I hope….problem is that it seems like the progress is merely creeping ahead. Maybe this will expedite things a bit.
