Lately Devin has been asking a lot of random questions. He seems to be at that dreadful age where kids ask all kinds of questions about things that we don’t really think about. He has the wife and I either scrambling for kid-friendly language, or just changing the subject. He’s not a philosopher yet, but he’s getting there.
Below are several questions that the boy asked us this week, and one that I made up. Which one did I make up?
A.) What does flabbergasted mean?
B.) Why do you kiss daddy on the mouth?
C.) What does Amen mean?
D.) Why is that spider so big and hairy?
E.) Why does caffeine make you hyper?
F.) Why are those little kids smoking?
Everyone with the correct answers will receive…. nothing. Though I’ll be grateful for your participation. I’ll update the post with the answer later this week!
Suspense!
I missed that part about guessing. I was excited thinking you would answer them all for us.
Okay, I’ll say you made up B. I have no reason for my pick.
Hilarious!!
Here is one of our family favorites:
Mom, if you are so mad at the President, why don’t you just be President yourself? You’re a good boss of our house.
The one you made up? Hopefully, (F) . . .
A) Surprised … or something like that
B) In an attempt to not exclude different types of relationships .. “People who like each other in a special way sometimes kiss on the mouth” .. “When you are older maybe you will like someone in a special way too”
C)The end? Heck that’s what I basically think when I hear it now.
D) Got nothing for that .. I would jokingly talk about how it ate flies to get so big.
E) Cause certain things effect your body in certain ways. Turkey makes you sleepy and coffee makes your hyper. I might talk about how medicine effects a person to make them better.
F)Hmmmmm …. hmmmm ….. every time I go to type something I get stuck …
This was a fun exercise. Although F left me speechless.

e?
I’m going to guess F. That seems like it might be a question a horrified parent might ask, as in “OH MY GOD! Why are those little kids smoking?!?!?!”
I would hope that F is the made up question, but knowing the way kids are these days it wouldn’t surprise me if he actually did ask you that. So I really have TWO guesses; my real guess is D but I’m hoping for F.
I love that kids can be so inquisitive, but when you’re caught off guard searching for the kid friendly answers can be pretty tough.
Your little guy is so funny.
My mother would just make up something interesting or just turn it into an elaborate story so that the child just becomes disinterested.
Use the short attention span against them.:)
I’ll guess that you made up D. Because a big hairy spider would probably get a “cool” not a “why?”.
They are all likely questions but I’m going for the spider question as well.
I got asked this series of questions yesterday, “Why don’t girls have penises? What do they have instead? Does that have the letter V at the beginning?”
Calgon, take me away!
Hey – you made it to my joint – thanks for visiting. I was like “boy, when is he going to come over?” Visit more often too – lol.
At any rate – I’m not going to dare answer those questions. Although I work w/pre-teens and children every saturday – it’d be interesting to see what they come up with.
It only gets worse — so prepare yourself. I informed my fifth grade son the other day that this year he would see the “puberty” movie at school. That was really stupid, because of course he said, “what’s puberty?” I told him it’s when your body goes through a lot of changes. “Like what?” he says. Like you grow hair in certain parts of your body where you don’t have hair now, like daddy. “What else?” he inquires. Well, I say, sometimes at night you might get an erection. (What the hell was I thinking? Except that I like to be honest and use the proper words for things) “What’s that?” he wants to know. I can’t back out now, so I tell him it’s when your penis gets hard and stands up. “OH!” he says, “been there, done that. It’s kind of cool!” 🙂
I’m hoping it’s F.
Also, shame on me for only reading your blog through my RSS reader lately. Nice new digs!
Nice new look – I like!
D sounds weird, but I think that the answer is F….please, I hope it is F
….and Christine, I can relate to the 5th grader conversation. I had a real winner last week! All I can say is OMG!!!
