Many men in this country are denied sex because their insurance companies won’t pay for ED medications. But the Mexican government is handing out free Viagra to elderly men with erectile dysfunction because they believe “everyone has a right to be happy”.
Where did they get that idea? Stole it from our Declaration of Independence, of course! We are the only country which guarantees “the pursuit of happiness”. Mexico goes one step further: it pays for it.
I believe men with prostate cancer should have their ED drugs reimbursed by insurance companies. There is a clear parallel here: women who’ve had breast cancer who have reconstructive surgery are covered by insurance. These operations are done not to ensure the womens’ survival but to improve their quality of life — make them feel better about themselves. In the same way, men who have ED as a consequence of PC should be allowed their “happiness”. And they’ll very likely feel better about themselves in the process.
I hate to encourage gender wars, but this is a no-brainer.

Here is the whole news story from cnninternational.com:
“Beginning December 1, Mexico City plans to hand out free medicine to elderly men with erectile dysfunction, the local government said, Medications such as Viagra, Levitra or Cialis reportedly will be offered under medical supervision.
“Everyone has the right to be happy,” said Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, governor of the federal district that encompasses the Mexican capital. “We have to protect people — senior citizens above all,” he said in a statement Thursday. “Many of them are abandoned and lack money. They don’t have medical services, and a society that doesn’t care for its senior citizens has no dignity”.
“To obtain the medicine, men must first undergo a “very, very detailed” medical check to screen for and possibly treat ailments such as hypertension and diabetes, the government said.”
Dear Leah,
I agree 100% with you that health insurance plans should cover Viagra or, for that matter, other prescribed medications like Levitra or Cialis, that might offset ED for men who have/had prostate cancer.
Yours is an apt comparison with paid reconstructive surgery for women after breast cancer. As you’ve stated, if women are covered for such surgery, which is primarily for enhancing their beauty and self-esteem, why don’t health insurance companies provide coverage for medications to offset ED to ease men’s emotional distress.
It may be equally compelling to note that health plans currently cover up to 80% of the cost for men’s vacuum erection devices(VED’s)when ED occurs due to prostate cancer or its adverse treatment side effects.
Evidently this coverage is due to the rehabilitative nature of such devices. Surely the use of Viagra has the same purpose and warrants equal coverage by health insurance plans.
