Yesterday Russell Simmons came out publicly in support of banning the words h-word, b-word and n-word from hip-hop music. The black community, in my opinion, has much bigger things to worry about. Removing three words from rap music will not solve poverty, crime, lack of education, lack of financial parity, self hate, prisons overpoulated with black males, racism, and so on. Education, the destruction of my personal ignorance, is what curbed my use of the words. (Also having a wife that I love and respect, and a son that I want to grow up with a general love and respect for himself and others, has helped see the “light” immensly.) We seem to be hacking at leaves instead of chopping at the root.Â
I heard a little girl cursing in conversation with her mother while me and my family were at the zoo. The girl sounded, ironically, like she was on Def Comedy Jam. The mother was laughing and having a good time with her potty-mouthed child. Where was I when it became ok for elementary school kids to curse around adults in public? That kid’s mouth, I’m willing to bet, had nothing to do with Hip-Hop. It had to do with clueless parents, and a sad educational system.
My point is that banning these words will not make any one a better person. It’s superficial. It’s cosmetic. This kind of move does not change a person’s (rapper’s?) deeply held values. We need to address the root causes that make people use the words in the first place. We must combat self-inflicted ignorance. The thing about hacking at leaves is that it’s a waste of time; eventually they will fall off anyway leaving us complacent and thinking that our hard work meant something…. Then they grow back! Let’s just knock down the whole damn tree down, turn it into mulch and grow something more positive in its place.Â
(Can someone please tell me who I jacked for the “tree” metaphor!)
And he just wants to ban them from the “clean” versions of the songs (bleep them out, I guess). My thought for the day – if you don’t like the images you see all around you, go out and make some that you will, or be the image yourself! (which is something you are already doing, whether you are fully aware of it or not)
Banning the “h-word, b-word and n-word” isn’t the magic wand that will solve all of our problems, but those words hurt people and send the wrong message within and without our community.
I think it’s better than nothing, but I hope Tom’s not right about it just being a ban on the “clean” versions.
What a wasted opportunity that would be.
The truth of the matter is in all communties, there are those parents who are helicopters and do everything for their child and would protect their child from the cold viruses if they could, then there are those parents like us who are like gorillas, we watch our kids, and protect our kids, but also allow them to experience some of the responsiblities of the world…then there are those parents like rabbits, who only come back to feed their kid and have little supervison. Its for this group that banning words like nigga and ho and other deregatory words help.
These group of kids are raised by rap music, the streets, violent video games, junk food, and other kids that don’t know any better. These are the kids who believe that Snitchin’ is bad even if someone gets killed or is destroying your neighborhood. These are the kids that think saggin’ is presentable for a job interview, these are the kids who think getting grillz is the answer to brushing your teeth…and these are the kids who keep the black spiral of failure going. These are the kids that society raises, and society needs to be responsible for since thier own parents are not!
On one hand I’m a firm believer in the right to free speech in this country – I don’t think any words should be banned from anything. On the other, I’m raising a two year old daughter that I refuse to expose to the mess that is today’s music and pop culture. It is my responsibility to fill my child’s head and heart with the positive, with that that will make her grow and flourish.
Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Simple, strong, true.
Until they ban Young Jeezy, Lil John and the rest of their ilk and expel them from the US to a remote arctic Island, I will not be impressed…
And screw up the lovely heart songs of the pinguins…ooh No!!!! The Saharas will be much better…I mean how angry will the camels be when you call them a Ho!!
i hate banning things and firing people for doing things that they ought not be doing (who is gonna fire that mom for letting her daughter go out in public with that potty mouth?)! i think rappers can go ahead and continue using language that i doubt they use around their parents, i didn’t even throw my hat in the ring to get Don Imus fired. there’s only one thing that works… and that’s hit these scoundrels where it hurts… not there, silly… i mean in their pocketbooks! these people are only in it for the money, but if you stop buying their CD’s, stop funding your kids going to see these sorry excuses for entertainers in concert, stop supporting the companies that produce and distribute this garbage, and let these radio stations and broadcasters know why you will no longer buy ANYTHING they advertise on their programs until they stop producing, distributing, and broadcasting this filth.
then (and only then) will record companies actually seek out more ARTISTS like Prince, Alicia Keys, and John Legend.
remember, if you keep doing what you do, then you’ll keep getting what you got!
