If I beat my son, then I should be prepared to for him to hate me when he’s older.
If I rob a bank, then I should be prepared to go to prison if I am caught.
If I drop out of college, then I should be prepared to live life without a degree.
If I don’t buy the warranty, then I should be prepared to buy a new whatever if it breaks.
If I do buy the warranty, then I should be prepared to be pissed when the whatever lasts forever without me needing the warranty.
If I love, cherish, support and listen to my son, then I should be prepared to be the father of a President.
If I curse out a colleague, then I should be prepared to be fired.
If I say misogynistic things about women on my latest rap album, then I should be prepared for Oprah (and many others) to boycott me.
If I run barefoot through the snow, then I should be prepared for frostbite.
If I drink four shots of tequila back-to-back, then I should be prepared to be drunk as hell.
If I don’t pursue my dreams, then I should be prepared to live with regrets.
If I am negative in my thinking and actions, then I should be prepared for negativity in my life.
If I love my wife, then I should be prepared to be loved in return.
And if I say something racist while millions listen, then I should be prepared to be called a racist.
There is a consequence to every action we choose to make (or not make). Consequences can be positive or negative. If there is one thing in life I hope I can teach my my son it’s how to make good decisions, and live with the inevitable bad ones.
Well said. Everybody wants the right to have choices, but nobody wants to face the consequences of their choices, positive or negative. If we could teach people that one goes with the other – especially our children – and that there’s no way around that fact then they might think more before they make some of the decisions that they do.
That’s what we teach ours everyday….Martin
So powerful. I’m going to print this and hang it above my desk (changing son to daughters and wife to husband :-)). I don’t think your family has anything to worry about.
If I eat Popeye’s chicken,…
…then I should be prepared for gut-wrenching pain.
Ouchie.
okay…but see that is where your statements are still not true… It should state:
If I say misogynistic things about women on my latest rap album, then I should be prepared to sell millions of records and be played on radio stations across the nation…
Because lets be honest…that is the reality of black music today!
And the problems is…I would like to teach my 4 year old daughter and 15 year old stepson that
IF THEY GO TO COLLEGE…Then they will live an easier life and get better jobs….
But the reality is…
If they go to college (and their parents do okay providing for them)…then they are guarenteed at least $40,000 of student loan debt that they may never get themselves out of without ruining their credit!
How ’bout that for reality!
I like 🙂 There are consequences that we all have to face instead of trying to justify and rationalize.
If only all actions had the same consequences… for everyone. I find myself explaining to my son why that’s sometimes not the case in life. He needs to excel and know that life is funny, but keep pushing.
Amen and amen!
Very well said!
