I have often discussed the importance of the Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP), which is a part of the Department of Defense (DOD) Medical Research Program. The program is geared to delivering funding for prostate cancer research that is translational, or will be quickly interpreted in the clinic.

Like all other government funding it very existence has been in question from budget to budget. The last two years have been a major political minefield with the program often coming into the sites of budget cutters. As it is, the Nation Institute of Health (NIH), which is the world’s largest cancer research funder has just experienced a 1.71 billion dollar cut from the sequester alone. This cut is on top of already reduced budgets over the past years.

Each budget cycle we struggle with the members of congress to continue the funding of this vital program. We used to ask for budget increases, but now we consider it a massive victory when we are able to just maintain the 80 million dollars we have received over the last many years.

I am happy to report that we have just had this massive victory for the budget cycle of 2014. If you go to the below link and then flip through to page 269 of the report (page 273 of the pdf) you can see that we have been given our $80,000,000.

Hail to us all!
