A very interesting article appeared in the Saturday, November 24, 2012 edition of the Washington Post. According to the article The New England Journal of Medicine which is among the most prestigious medical journal in the world regularly features articles over which pharmaceutical companies and their employees exert significant influence.
The problem is simple, over a year-long period ending this last August, about two-thirds of the articles on new drugs published in the Journal were co-written by employees of the companies that made the drugs.
So, the real question we need to ask can drug research still be trusted?
The Journal’s reliance on industry research and authors reflects the ability of pharmaceutical companies to shape science and influence what doctors prescribe for their patients. This is very scary.
